5 Signs You Need an Electrical Panel Upgrade

How to know when your breaker box can no longer keep up with your home's electrical demands.

Your electrical panel is the heart of your home's electrical system. It distributes power to every outlet, light, and appliance in your house. But like any critical component, panels age -- and many homes across Middle Tennessee are running on panels that were never designed for today's electrical demands.

At Deaton Electric, we upgrade electrical panels throughout Cottontown, Gallatin, Hendersonville, Goodlettsville, White House, and the surrounding areas. Here are the five most common signs that tell us a homeowner needs a panel upgrade.

1. Your Panel Is 100 Amps or Less

Most homes built before the 1990s in Middle Tennessee were wired with 100-amp electrical panels. At the time, that was sufficient -- families had fewer electronics, no home offices, and certainly no EV chargers. Today, a 100-amp panel simply cannot keep up with the demands of modern living.

If your home has a 100-amp panel and you are running central air, a heat pump, multiple large appliances, and the typical array of modern electronics, you are likely pushing your panel to its limits. Upgrading to a 200-amp panel gives your home the headroom it needs to operate safely and efficiently.

2. You Have a Federal Pacific or Zinsco Panel

This is the most urgent reason to upgrade. Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) Stab-Lok panels and Zinsco panels are known fire hazards. These panels were widely installed in homes throughout Tennessee from the 1950s through the 1980s, and studies have shown that their breakers can fail to trip during an overload, creating a serious risk of electrical fire.

If you open your panel and see the names "Federal Pacific," "FPE," "Stab-Lok," or "Zinsco" on the breakers or panel door, we strongly recommend replacing the panel as soon as possible. Many insurance companies are also beginning to require replacement of these panels for coverage.

3. Your Breakers Trip Frequently

Occasional breaker trips happen -- usually when you overload a circuit by running too many devices at once. But if your breakers trip regularly, especially the same breaker, it is a sign of a deeper problem. Frequent tripping can indicate overloaded circuits, a panel that cannot handle your electrical load, or failing breakers that need replacement.

Rather than simply resetting the breaker each time, have a licensed electrician evaluate your panel. The solution might be as simple as redistributing circuits, or it might be time for a full panel upgrade to handle your home's demands.

4. You Are Adding Major Appliances or Systems

Planning to install an EV charger in your garage? Adding a hot tub to the backyard? Upgrading to a larger HVAC system? These high-demand additions require dedicated circuits and significant amperage. If your existing panel is already near capacity, adding these loads without upgrading can create dangerous overload conditions.

Before any major addition, have an electrician assess your panel's capacity. In many cases, upgrading the panel is a necessary first step that ensures your new equipment operates safely and your existing circuits are not strained.

5. You Notice Warning Signs Around the Panel

Physical warning signs around your electrical panel should never be ignored. These include:

  • A burning or acrid smell near the panel
  • Scorch marks or discoloration on the panel door or surrounding wall
  • Buzzing, crackling, or humming sounds from the panel
  • Breakers that feel hot to the touch
  • Rust or corrosion on the panel or breakers
  • Flickering lights throughout the house when large appliances cycle on

Any of these signs indicate that your panel is under stress or may have internal damage. If you notice a burning smell or see scorch marks, turn off the main breaker and call an electrician immediately -- these are signs of a potential electrical fire.

What to Expect from a Panel Upgrade

A panel upgrade is a straightforward process for a licensed electrician. At Deaton Electric, we typically complete a standard 100A to 200A upgrade in a single day. The process involves coordinating with your utility company to temporarily disconnect power, removing the old panel, installing the new panel with modern breakers, and having the work inspected.

Power is usually off for 4 to 8 hours during the upgrade. We work efficiently to minimize the disruption to your daily routine and ensure everything passes inspection before we leave.
